Eclipse No.1

Let me introduce to you the first installment in the Eclipse series. This series embarks upon my visual interpretation of the battle between depression and mania, a condition which is typical to bipolar disorder sufferers. Those of you who want to understand more about this disease can look here and here.

On Design...

I truly believe that any design should come from the soul of the designer. The design should reflect its nature, whether to solve a problem, to delight an audience or to enhance one's life. Good design is difficult to achieve. It takes discipline and a lot of will-power to use the grey matter in the designer's head. It's so much easier to find 'inspirations' from design books and the web, but to me, this practise is not designing. I believe that a design is only suitable for the exact purpose it's made for. And no other design can fit in and be called a successful one.

I also believe that to have a great design, a synergy between the designer and the client is paramount. A designer could always guess what the client wants but if the client is able to express him or herself and articulate the things that he or she wants with the design, the final product would be totally wonderful. In my experience as a designer, I always found out that clients who knew what they want would help me produce the best designs.

Koleq #5

1986 was my best year in MCKK  :)  Being a fifth former… I felt like a King. Even though there were the A-Level students at that time, I didn't care. Form 5 was King. I was the prefect for Dorm 22. Dorm 22, or what my batchmates called the Club Med (I still don't know WHY they chose this name), was at the West Wing, fronting the tennis courts.

It was my SPM year, but guess what, I didn't study! I filled my life with the Prefects Board, the Art Club and of course, the Photography Club. Sports? Nah… I was equivalent to today's 'kapal layar.' 1985 was uneventful, but 1986 had too many events! No wonder I didn't 'score' in my SPM.

Anyway, Koleq #5 is my rendition of my life in MCKK in the year 1986. Bright and fun. The darkness was reserved at the edges, a fringe in my life then  :)

Koleq #4

My life in 1985 was quite uneventful. It's full of routine. As a form 4 student. I was in a limbo, neither here nor there. I stayed inthe East Wing but most of my time was spent at the classroom or the art room. It was my first time staying in Big School and to me it was kinda special. I always wished that I could have stayed at the Overfloor (or Overflow to the earlier generations) but the East Wing dorrmitory was good enough. The Big Tree somehow provided a lush shelter from the heat of Kuala Kangsar. Its leaves were cooling to the eyes. Though it'd be kinda scary and creepy at night haha.

Koleq #3

1984 was the year of the Olympics in Los Angeles. And THAT event played an important part in me. Because of the American gymnast, Mary Lou Retton :)  And a few of my batch mates had their favorites athletes as well.

1984 was also the second year I spent at New Hostel. There were 3 third formers in every dorm. The rest were the second formers. Thus, 1984 was the year when my batch was divided into 2 groups. 30 or so in New Hostel and the rest in Big School. At the Overfloor (the correct term should be Overflow) to be exact.

1984 was also the year when I sat for my SRP (Sijil Rendah Pelajaran) which is equivalent to today's PMR. At that time, SRP was just a key so that I could stay on and continue my studies in MCKK haha… well… at least that's how I viewed the exam.

Koleq #2

This piece is the second in the Koleq series. It encapsulates my experience as a second former living at New Hostel, which was and still is located at the north eastern tip of the MCKK compound. And  studying in classes far from the dormitory, at the southwestern tip of the school compound. Somehow, this diagonal movement, day in and day out, had enlightened me for the whole year. 1983 was a calm year for me.

This piece is for sale.

What is GICLEE?

Giclées (zhee-klay) are Museum quality Fine-Art reproductions, also called Archival Prints. These are the result of highly advanced digital printing technology.

A Fine-art Giclée is the closest to an original painting you can get. These artworks are made with an ultra- high-resolution fine-art printer, using seven cartridges of the very finest archival inks on acid free paper. Independent testing by Wilhelm Imaging Research Inc. (a world-leader in image-longevity testing) has established that these “Archival-Prints” or Giclées will last more than 200 years before any noticeable shift in color integrity occurs. Unlike regular printed reproductions, Giclées are truly durable “Museum quality” Fine-Art reproductions.
The color and artistic value, quality of materials, and overall looks make a Fine-art Giclée much more valuable and much more expensive to produce than any other type of reproduction. Its Market value increases even more, if it is of a limited edition of 100 pieces or less, and if it has been pencil signed and numbered by the Artist. Giclées are usually accompanied by an Authenticity Certificate” indicating title of the original, and size of the limited edition.

A Fine-art Giclée is created by tiny jets spraying millions of droplets of archival, pigmented inks onto a sheet of fine art, acid free paper or onto cotton canvas. This spray of ink, more that 4 million droplets per second, whirls onto paper spinning on a drum at 250 inches per second. Hence the name giclée is French for “fine spray.”

Precise computer calculations control seven ink jets that together produce 512 shades of dense, special quality ink. The information controlling the jets comes directly from a computer - no printing film or plates are involved. The computer’s information is scanned directly from the artist’s original work or a digital image of it. An art print emerges, of a superior quality than a serigraph or lithograph. A true Museum- quality Fine-Art reproduction.

Koleq #1

This is number 1 of 5 from the Koleq series. Koleq series is my interpretations of the ups and downs, the success and failures, the hopes and despair, of the time spent at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar 1982-1986.

Koleq #1 visualizes the structured life as a first former at Prep School. Surrounded by the prefects, it seemed that in 1982, my life was well protected. Nevertheless, there had been episodes where the protectiveness had actually become the enemy for the first formers… whenever, somehow, the prefects could be seen by the innocent eyes of 13 year old kids, as tyrannical.

Nevertheless… 1982 was a sweet year.
